Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

The Lymphatic System is a vital part of the immune system and consists of a network of organs, vessels and fluid which all work together to protect the body from infection, destroy old or abnormal cells and remove excess fluid. It also helps the body maintain normal fluid levels and absorb certain fats and fat-soluble vitamins from food.

It is closely related to the blood circulation system and uses lymph (a clear, watery fluid) to collect germs, bacteria, viruses and waste products from the body’s tissues. It then transports them to the lymph glands to be filtered and made harmless before making their way to the bloodstream; it acts as part of the body’s drainage and defence system.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses very light pressure with rhythmic and flowing techniques and is performed on dry skin or with minimal oil. It encourages the natural movement of lymph fluid to the lymph nodes, helps relax the nervous system, reduce pain and support the immune system.  Its use is also beneficial pre and post surgery to help reduce swelling and minimise scarring.
